Haveil Havalim #377 – “I’m late, I’m late”

This is Issue #377, the belated September 16th issue of Haveil Havalim, a weekly carnival of Jewish and Israeli blogs.  I didn’t count, mind you… but I took the number from last week’s (hosted by Ruth at Beneath the Wings) and added one to it.  I hope it’s right.

The Haveil Havalim blog carnival was founded by Soccer Dad and every week a different blogger takes a turn to host a weekly collection of blog posts. The term הֲבֵל הֲבָלִים / “Haveil Havalim,” which means "Vanity of Vanities," is from Kohelet, (Ecclesiastes) which was written by King Solomon. King Solomon built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got bogged down in materialism and other excesses and realized that it was nothing but “hevel,” or in English, “vanity.”

The carnival is hosted by different bloggers each week, and jointly coordinated through our Facebook Group.  If you blog about Israel or Jewish-related subjects, please feel free to join the Facebook group or have a look at the Haveil Havalim websiteI think it’s worth copying a note from the previous host:  “I may be asked to give publicity to blogs which I disagree with… I DO NOT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH ALL THE BLOGS PRESENTED  HERE!”

Did you know the White Rabbit in the original (non-Disney) Alice in Wonderland didn’t actually say, “I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date”?  What he actually said was far more articulate:  “Oh dear!  Oh dear! I shall be late!… Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it's getting!”  But of course, just like when it comes to anything pertaining to Israel, it was dumbed down for an American audience.  (ba-dum-bump!)

Speaking of which, let’s see what bloggers in the rather busy jblogosphere this week have to say about…

Israel

Like a Cheshire cat, stuck up a tree… or just a meaningless free image I found on Wikimedia.

Batya presents Reflecting on Life in Shiloh versus Living Any Place Else posted at Shiloh Musings.

Rivkah Lambert Adler presents Is It Odd or Is It G-D? posted at Bat Aliyah, saying, "This is a guest post by olah chadasha Joan Kristall who views her new life in Israel with great affection."

Judaism

Tekiah!!!

Ben-Yehudah presents Rosh HaShannah Challenge! posted at Esser Agaroth.

Susan Barnes presents Turning Toward the High Holy Days posted at Susan Barnes.

Teddy presents Cartoon Parsha:  Bereishis, Part 1 and Bereishis, Part 2 and almost a full year of original cartoons for each weekly parsha at Kosher Nice Time Cartoons.  Please visit and “follow” his blog – he’s very talented, but also happens to be my husband!

Jacob Richman presents 221 Rosh Hashana Videos posted at Good News from Israel, saying, "Thanks! Shana Tova, Jacob"

And the best from last – no, no, modestly saving my own posts for last, I wanted to share how very easy it is to get started learning Torah with little ones in this post about my 4-year-old’s weekly Parsha Narration.  Homeschooled or not, it really is that simple!

Personal Posts

The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo…

Batya presents Israeli Medals in Paralympics are More Important Than Winning in Regular Olympics posted at Shiloh Musings.

Batya presents Only in Israel: Babysitting in the Cemetery posted at me-ander.

John Morrow presents NerdWallet’s Top 5 Tech Nonprofits posted at NerdWallet Blog - Credit Card Watch, saying, "Hi there, this post is not specific to Jewish culture but I highlight the nonprofit tech organization, Darim Online for their philanthropic efforts towards the Jewish community. Hope you enjoy it!"  (I have allowed this post because he added a comment indicating why it might be of interest to HH readers, thus rendering it non-spam in my opinion)

Batya presents There's a Price... posted at me-ander.

Two plugs for my own blog posts, on my two other blogs:

I’ve been slowly starting to share my somewhat unoriginal thoughts on our upcoming iy”h aliyah – the ups and the downs – for a while over at Adventures in Aliyahland, and most recently, though it’s still almost a year away, I wrote about Saying goodbye… (hint:  make aliyah when you’re young, preferably before having kids!)

Finally, and very practically since we still have some yamim tovim coming up, I demonstrate how surprised I was that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks when it comes to weaving a beautiful round challah for the Tishrei chaggim in Well-rounded challah? over at my bread blog, Adventures in Breadland!  (plus, there’s a link to a video tutorial)

Politics (of course)

We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.  (okay, the Cheshire cat said it, not the Hatter… )

Iris Tal presents Shiloh Musings: Worldwide Delegates Participate in the New Media & Public Diplomacy Seminar at the Ariel University Center posted at Shiloh Musings, saying, "This is very newsworthy and quite a feather in the Ariel University Center's cap!"

Touring Israel

'It's something very like learning geography,' thought Alice, as she stood on tiptoe in hopes of being able to see a little further.

Batya presents Joining the Pilgrimage to Tel Shiloh posted at me-ander.

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of haveil havalim using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on the Haveil Havalim facebook page hosts list.

It's Heart Month: 3 days left to save lives!

Dear Friends & Family: Hi, everybody! Sorry I can’t stop by in person... you're a bit out of my area.  :-) We’re out walking up and down on our street on this beautiful afternoon to raise money for Heart & Stroke.  This cause is important to me (I won't say it's close to my heart , because that would be tacky!).  I hope you'll join me by donating online. Growing up, I watched as every single one of my grandparents' lives were shortened by heart disease and strokes, and my father had a defibrillator that saved his life on more than one occasion.  Heart disease and stroke kill 1 in 3 Canadians and are the #1 killer of women. Please click this link to be redirected to my main page at the Heart & Stroke website: http://tinyurl.com/AtlasHeart Thus ends my personal appeal.  Official information follows.  :-))) ----- Heart disease and stroke is the #1 killer of women - taking more women's lives than all forms of cancer combined. But no one is immune. Th
