This week, it’s the book How to Build an Aby Sara Mida – a birthday gift from my sister Sara over a year ago. The book comes with foam letter-building pieces very similar to those sold for Handwriting Without Tears, only much less expensively.
At the time, I thought it was a dumb gift for him, and he’d never get any use out of it. He was just barely 2 and more interested in EATING the pieces than reading them.
So I kind of pushed it in Naomi’s direction, but it never really piqued her interest. And then it sat, hung actually, in the nice mesh bag it came in, from the fireplace knob, where GZ took it down from time to time to stack the pieces and wave them around meaninglessly… until this week, when he discovered the book on the shelf, figured out that the letters go WITH the book, and started building… letters!
As I was trying to get a picture of him with these, I kept shouting “don’t turn the page – just let me get a picture!” But once he is finished with each letter, he moves on to the next page just as quickly as he can.
Amazing… the drive to LEARN!!!
It is all a matter of in the right time. Gav Zev looks like he is having such fun. We too have been pulling out toys/tools that have long sat untouched because she did not want them yet.
