Menu Plan Monday #29: 27 Elul, 5770

Why the weird dates? Click here to find out!
Other “weekly memes” I participate in that may or may not interest you:

We are a Jewish family of 6 (2 parents, 4 kids) and all our meals are kosher.

Newcomers, you can read my MPM intro here which tells you all about who we are and what we eat, or just visit my super-duper-list-tastic itemization of Everything We Eat.

Yes, it is now the 27th of the only month that doesn’t have Shabbos Mevorchim, the special Shabbos where we announce and bless the coming month. I guess because in Elul, it’s pretty obvious what’s right around the corner. Last week would have been Shabbos Mevorchim, which means this week is Rosh Hashanah – and GZ’s upsherin is less than 2 weeks away.

Just two “little” meals this week… three if you count yesterday’s:

Sunday: BBQ hamburgers @ Mommy’s

Monday: Mystery bread (discovered cleaning out freezer)… with… maybe veggie chili?

Tuesday: Chicken-sausage (discovered cleaning out freezer) (Ted must have thrown it away!!!!) "Old hot dogs in the pressure-cooker" risotto. (doesn't sound, or probably taste, as good as the chicken sausage would have, but I have looked EVERYWHERE and there's no trace of it!!!)

Rest of the Week: See the official Rosh Hashanah 5771 Meal Plan!!!

It’s great having so much room in the freezer now (though I promptly filled it up with challahs and honey cake)!

May you and your loved ones be inscribed AND SEALED in the recipe book of life for a sweet, delicious year!

What do we tell our kids about Chabad and “Yechi”?

If I start by saying I really like Chabad, and adore the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, z"l, well... maybe you already know where I'm headed. Naomi Rivka has been asking lately what I think about Chabad.  She asks, in part, because she already knows how I feel.  She already knows I’m bothered, though to her, it’s mostly about “liking” and “not liking.”  I wish things were that simple. Our little neighbourhood in Israel has a significant Chabad presence, and Chabad conducts fairly significant outreach within the community.  Which sounds nice until you realize that this is a religious neighbourhood, closed on Shabbos, where some huge percentage of people are shomer mitzvos.  Sure, it’s mostly religious Zionist, and there are a range of observances, for sure, but we’re pretty much all religious here in some way or another. So at that point, this isn’t outreach but inreach .  Convincing people who are religious to be… what? A lot of Chabad’s efforts here are focused on kids, including a
