Why stop now?  On beyond zebra!

My “thought” over Shabbos was WHY STOP JUST WHEN IT’S GETTING GOOD?

Funny thing… I did a lot of homeschool reading a few years ago, convinced myself, and have read almost none since.  But I checked out a few library books on Thursday, including Susan Wise Bauer’s The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home, and it’s been very encouraging.

Most parents only get the “thrill” of taking care of their baby’s body needs – changing, feeding, sleeping.  Once they have the basic physical routines down, they turn them over to professionals for the “real” part of their lives.

But guess what?  Educating your kids is a ton more interesting, more fun, more rewarding and more REAL than wiping their tushies.

Some days, the good days, I cannot believe anybody would give up this pleasure.

In Dr. Seuss’s On Beyond Zebra, he presents a radical new alphabet just waiting for anyone who dares to wonder what letter comes AFTER z (which I pronounce “zed” – so there!).

Most people are not so adventurous… homeschoolers are.

  3. Yes, it is most certainly exciting to continue to take charge of our child's needs and not turn him over to the care of professionals.

Are Jews an "underrepresented community" in children’s publishing?

I applied for a writing award yesterday. I'm not going to get it, but that's not what I wanted to share with you. Here's what I wanted to share. This box:   I stared at this box for a long, long time. And then I decided not to check it. Even though I believe people like me truly are underrepresented, we probably wouldn’t fit the definition in other people's minds. Why? Well, because we're European. Because we are white. Because as everybody knows, Jews control the media. (do we???) If anything, some people say, Jews are over -represented in publishing. And yet. Some definitions are careful not to include people like me. Like this random definition from the State of California which defines underrepresented for some very specific business purposes as: "an individual who self-identifies as Black, African American, Hispanic, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Native Hawaiian, or Alaska Native, or who self-identi
